Suitable climatic condition: Chillies grow best in warm and humid conditions. The ideal temperature for growing green chilly is somewhere between 22-25°C.

Amount of soil needs: Choosing the right pot is an important element of growing a plant to its full capacity. A pot that is about 12” deep with proper drainage holes would be ideal for growing chillies.

How to Sow: 

  • Sow chilli seeds in a seedling tray first, plant out the seedlings later.
  • Fertilize the soil using 100% organic potting soil or manure, fill the seed tray with soil and spread the chilli seeds on it.
  • Soak seeds in 3% Panchagavya solution overnight for best results.
  • Plant seeds at a depth of 1/4th inch, and make sure the soil remains warm throughout the germination period.
  • Add only a thin layer of soil above the seeds and then sprinkle some water.
  • Keep the seeds warm and moist.
  • Capsicums are suitable for growing in containers as well.

Germination time (average): The Chili germination period typically lasts 7 to 14 days.

Water & Sunlight needs: Chillies do not require as much water as other plants, therefore, water only when the top layer of the soil looks dry. These plants may rot as they cannot withstand water for a very long time, so ensure that you maintain porous soil.

Grow your chillies is the area that receives 5-6 hours of sunlight every day. Your pants or pots should be placed in the area that receives partial shade.

How long for yield: Chili will be ready for harvest about 60-70 days from planting.

How much yield on an average: 15 to 25 per plant every time you harvest if your soil is in great condition.

Fertilizers to use: Feed your plants with organic fertilizers at regular intervals. You can use cow dung, tea compost, fruit peelings, etc to fertilize your soil. If the soil is rich in minerals, your plants will grow well.

Common problems/diseases: 

  • Yellowing of foliage and wilting upper leaves, wilting spread to all parts of plant leaves remain attached to plant and are dark green in color, red-brown discoloration of vascular tissue, plant death. Plant pepper in well-draining soils and avoid waterlogging.
  • White, powdery growth on the underside of leaves starts in patches but starts to spread across whole leaves, including the top surface; yellow-brown discoloration on the underside of leaves and leaves curling. Use an appropriate fungicide to prevent this.
